From Brazil to the Colombian Caribbean and the Pacific coast in Northern Peru and Ecuador, white and golden beaches are plentiful in sandy South America
Latin America has no shortage of great places to kick back and chill out.
Whether you want a special honeymoon getaway, a celebration villa holiday or just a few days relaxing in a spa hotel by the sand.
Brazil, beaches and bikinis roll off the tongue like sun, sand and sea as soon as you step off the plane in Rio de Janeiro. Although we love Rio, some of the best beaches in South America are to be discovered in the northeast of the country.
Close to the city of Recife is Sao Miguel dos Milagres where you will find stunning beaches along 15 kilometres of coastline – as yet almost undiscovered – along the Alagoas coast. Or travel further north and swim with dolphins which come close to the shore in Pipa, and enjoy the party atmosphere in this little town just an hour away from Natal.
The beaches of Bahia are perhaps even more famous: Brazilian bundas in various shapes and sizes provide plenty to entertain not just the locals. However, for many of our guests, a getaway from the crowds is important. Happily, Bahia’s expansive coastline has provided hoteliers with plenty of opportunities: we love the excellent spa hotels like the Txai Resort (conveniently served by nearby Ilheus Airport) or the wonderful archipelago of Itacare and Boipeba for a taste of beach island paradise. A charming alternative is to visit the dreamy and laid-back colonial village of Trancoso where, again, a long stretch of sandy beach, Praia Espelho, will take you away from the world you have left behind.
Outside Brazil, there are many other truly excellent beach options: the Caribbean coasts and islands off Panama and Colombia offer some fabulous, unspoilt palm-fringed beaches. The warm waters of the Caribbean Sea here are ideal not just for swimming, but also for sailing, fishing, snorkeling, diving and a host of other water sports.
The beaches on the Pacific coast of northern Peru are another newly-emerging option – and a great place to relax and wind down after a busy Andean itinerary. The small town of Mancora was discovered by backpackers and surfers several years ago, but the more secluded beaches a little to the south are now going distinctly upmarket with some delightfully exclusive small beachfront hotels, and a growing number of top-end private villas.
