Accommodation
Scalesia LodgeIsabela, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
Guests stay in 16 comfortable tented rooms imported from South Africa, whilst the main building is built in a contemporary style designed by one of the best known architects in Ecuador.
Isabela is located to the west of the archipelago and is an active volcanic island – most recently Wolf Volcano erupted in May 2015. Whilst Scalesia Lodge is located in the lush, green uplands of the island, much of the scenery is strangely lunar in appearance and excursions include trekking up the Sierra Negra volcano to view its huge caldera and the lava formations from the last eruption in the 1970s.
However, there are also long stretches of deserted beaches and wildlife includes marine iguanas, Galapagos penguins, giant tortoises and numerous birds. We loved Scalesia Lodge and would recommend combining a stay with a land or sea based stay on Santa Cruz to allow gusts to see a full cross section of wildlife.
