Buzios
A chic coastal retreat within easy reach of Rio de Janeiro
Put firmly on the international map by Bridget Bardot in the 1960s, Buzios has maintained its reputation as an upmarket destination owing to its position on an attractive peninsula studded with bays offering a choice of widely differing beaches.
The main centre of the town runs along the sea front by the Praia do Canto and the main port. The charming white painted buildings with red pantile roofs have a somewhat European feel. Many of these house a wide range of high quality bars and restaurants with shady terraces overlooking the sea and the occasional cruise ship.
The circular bay of Ferradura is home to laid-back beach bars with chairs in the sand and Latino music; its location and shape ensures that the water is always calm even on windy days.
Brava beach at the end of the peninsula is backed by cliffs and has a much wilder feel and is popular with surfers. In total, there are said to be 23 different beaches on the peninsula from which to take your pick.
Buzios is a lively place and offers the whole range of beach and golfing activities during the day, and varied bars and nightclubs for those who want to party into the early hours. It also offers some wonderful hotels and private villas where it is surprisingly easy to relax and get away from it all.
