Accommodation
El MercadoCusco, Peru
Formerly a fruit and vegetable market, this historic building has been converted by Mountain Lodges of Peru into a charming historic hotel arranged around a central courtyard, surrounded by a stone cloister and carved wooden balconies on the upper floors.
This hotel is where people embarking on the Lares Trail or Salkantay Trek treks in the Sacred Valley stay for their first night and consequently has a youthful, vibrant feel. There are blackboards displaying the food menus and cocktails, tables and chairs in the courtyard and a number of rocking horses which reference the days when the market relied on horses for deliveries.
The 31 rooms are all individual and very well furnished, some with views out over the roofs of Cusco. We can provide advice on our favourite rooms there.
The hotel is located in a quiet street away from the crowds of visitors and hawkers in the city centre, yet is only a ten minute walk away from the main central square.
