Inhotim - An Undiscovered Paradise of Contemporary Art
Inhotim in Minas Gerais, Brazil, cannot easily be defined. It is a sculpture park, contemporary art display, botanical garden and spiritual retreat combined. First time visitors are struck by the beauty of the artwork and the setting and question how come they had not heard of it before.
This 350-acre cultural Eden (set within a 3000-acre estate) was founded by mining magnate Bernando Paz. There are some 21 art pavilions designed by different architects and 110 grandiose artworks installed within the landscape. The artists come from over 30 countries and include some well-known names such as Anish Kapoor, Steve McQueen and Doug Aitken. Captivating shapes, bright colours and even conceptual artworks with pools which you can bathe in make a day out at Inhotim an experience for all the family.
There are two restaurants, but the one which we would recommend to our clients is Tamboril which has a great outdoor seating area. You will easily spend a full day at Inhotim, but we would recommend combining it with a stay at the Solar do Rosario in the well preserved colonial town of Ouro Preto which is a two hour drive away. After this a visit to Tiradentes and the Solar da Ponte is a surely obligatory.
