Giant Hidden Sculptures
Surprise is the reaction of guests when they first encounter the sculptures at this hotel “somewhere in South America”.
As you ascend the hillside above the old estate buildings (usually on horseback or in an old Land Rover), a group of rust coloured human figures slowly come into view over the crest of the hill. The leader of the group is a female figure standing erect over 30 feet tall with long flowing hair and arms outstretched to embrace nature and the beautiful countryside in front of her. All the figures are in positions of reverence and supplication and represent religions at one with nature.
An easy clue for readers of our newsletters: They belong to one of the best family hotels in South America.
Too much information perhaps: These sculptures are the work of Karen Cusolito, a Californian artist who made them in the USA and then had them transported as single pieces by land and sea to our secret destination, in itself quite a logistical exercise. Before accepting the commission she had to visit the site to approve their position and setting, and it was her requirement that the sculptures be positioned together as a ‘family’.
They are all made out of recycled steel and scrap metal and are on a monumental scale, but the ambience is surprisingly serene and encourages thoughtful reflection. It is also a great spot to enjoy a sundowner in the evening, with extensive views towards distant mountains!
Shhh….if you know where they are, don’t ruin the surprise for others!
