Casa GangotenaQuito, Ecuador
Casa Gangotena is a beautifully restored 1914 mansion with a plethora of original, Art Nouveau features including decorated ceilings, wall murals, wood parquet floors and tall windows. It is situated on the corner of the Paza San Francisco, which dates back to the time of the Incas and is included in Quito’s list of heritage properties. According to Spanish chronicles from the 15th century the hotel stands on the site of an Inca temple.
The 31 elegant rooms are furnished with every modern convenience and complemented by minimalist grey marble bathrooms. Service is discreet and professional.
This stylish boutique hotel is ideally located in the heart of Quito’s old town and boasts wonderful views from its roof terrace (often of religious and cultural events that unfold in the square below). The restaurant features attractive stained glass windows and funky flower arrangements, while Chef Andres Davila serves excellent modern international cuisine with an Ecuadorian twist. There is also a verdant glass-roofed courtyard featuring Ecuadorian orchids; ideal for relaxing in. Here you can also take traditional Ecuadorian ‘high-tea’ of fresh Ecuadorian coffee, infusions of different Andean herbs and traditional arriba chocolate delicacies.
The hotel is a great base for exploring Quito’s baroque churches, visiting local artisans and craft schools, exploring markets and museums and making your own discoveries in the locality.
Overall, this is one of our favourite Quito city centre hotels.
