Accommodation
Hotel SazaguaPereira, Colombia
Hotel Sazagua is something different from other hotels in the Coffee Region: a unique contemporary style boutique retreat set in delightful gardens with a pool and spa. The hotel is located within an upmarket residential area on the outskirts of Perira about 15 minutes’ drive from the airport. If you feel that you are staying in a large private house that is because you are: this boutique hotel was previously the home of the charming and sophisticated owner.
Each section of the hotel is a visual delight with bold colours. The striking artworks and numerous artefacts throughout the hotel are part of the owner’s private collection. There is nothing mass-produced about the Sazagua. The ten rooms are outstanding, and not outrageously priced. We particularly loved the first floor master suite, with its own Jacuzzi and private balcony. The two junior suites are also good value and one has a loft area with an additional bed – ideal for a family. The restaurant at Sazagua produces some of the best food in the region. You will want to eat here – and not just because you are some distance from the centre of town with little other choice. The cuisine is international with strong Colombian influences. The bar area is either set up in the covered pavilion in the garden, or, when the hotel is less busy, next to the restaurant, which gives an intimate and cozy living room feel… just like being in a private house!
And of course you can use this as your base to explore the mountainous landscapes and eponymous plantations of the region, added as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2011. The weather here is slightly cooler than on the coastal regions and most of the plantations offer tours, tastings and samples.
