MukulPacific Coast, Nicaragua

Mukul Resort and Spa is undoubtedly the most exciting new hotel development in Nicaragua, standing as a beacon and pointing to a brighter future for the country. Opened in 2013, the resort is set in a 1,670 acre private reserve on Nicaragua’s Emerald Coast and features three beaches, an award-winning Spa and 18-hole golf course.

Choose from stylish one- or two-bed beach villas or one of the ‘bohios’ which are perched dramatically on the hillside near the spa. Each bohio has a wooden deck (many with fantastic views) and a private plunge pool. The epitome of luxury, however, are the two Master Suites – Don Carlos and Dona Vivian – which double up as the Pellas family’s private beach home when they are in residence.

Glamorous, yet unpretentious, Mukul Resort is perfect for romantic couples as well as families – and there is a great kids’ club with activities and its own pool. Service is excellent and the villas and suites have their own private butler to look after you.

The spa is truly outstanding – in fact it is six spas in one, with six completely separate themed facilities. It is little wonder that this was the only Latin America spa listed in the Conde Nast Traveller ‘World’s Best Spa’ Guide. The golf course – with its 18th hole on the beach – is also highly acclaimed.

There is plenty to do at Mukul, with community visits (the project is very community-oriented), hiking and cycling along the trails or spending time surfing, snorkeling or kayaking on the beach. Or simply lounge by the pool with a cocktail. A romantic cocktail by the pool and private dinner on the beach under the stars with a roaring bonfire provides a fitting end to the day.

We recommend a helicopter ride to or from the airport, as this will also give you a bird’s-eye view of the spectacular coastline scenery, and the Pellas family’s sugar cane plantations from which their famous Flor de Cana rum is made.

And if you have been wondering about the name – ‘Mukul’ is the Mayan word for ‘Secret’. You read it here first….
