Lapa Rios Eco-LodgeOsa Peninsular, Costa Rica
Set in a private nature reserve on the Osa peninsula, within 1,000 acres of some of Central America’s most important lowland tropical rainforest, Lapa Rios Eco-Lodge is a true paradise for lovers of wildlife, birding, nature and beaches.
The hotel is set about 350 feet above sea level and overlooks the point where the Golfo Dulco meets the Pacific Ocean. The vision is to work in unison with nature to protect the surrounding environment and assist the local community, while from a service perspective the emphasis is on welcoming guests as friends.
The 16 sustainably constructed open-air palm-thatched bungalows are perched on three ridges with sea views and the suites feature an open-sky shower. Walking paths and stairs connect all the rooms to the main lodge building.
The food in the restaurant is organic, and most is sourced locally to support farmers, whilst the spa also maintains the same principal, offering massages and facials using only local botanicals.
Lapa Rios is, perhaps, a little more ‘eco’ than ‘luxury’ but we still feel this is a great place from which to explore the astonishingly rich ecosystems and wildlife of the Osa Peninsular and Corcovado National Park. It is also a model ecotourism project and was a pioneer in the development of sustainable tourism in Costa Rica.
