Rio PerdidoNorth West, Costa Rica

Driving through desert-like surroundings down a gravel road, one’s arrival at Rio Perdido is like wandering onto the path to find the ‘lost river’.

This new hotel and adventure centre is dramatically set at the confluence of two rivers – the hot waters of the small Rio Perdido and the larger Rio Blanco, which forges its way through an impressive canyon. With such a kaleidoscope of scenery, this is a wonderful encounter with nature far away from the stresses of the city.

With warm, friendly local staff and a spacious, stylish reception, bar and dining area, Rio Perdido is somewhere that is notably different and special from the first instance… and this impression only grows with time.

The 20 bungalows that sit unsuspectingly near the main building are decorated in a minimalist style with clean-cut interiors and offer all modern amenities, air conditioning and a private verandah with hammock. The rooms are cleverly designed to offer flexible accommodation for two or three guests.

The hotel offers an array of thermal pools and a brand new spa, but for us, the highlight was the visit to the Rio Perdido itself. It is a surreal experience to enter a fast flowing river that is actually hot! Cake yourself in thermal mud and then relax in the fast flowing hot waters.

For the adrenaline junkie or those just trying something totally different and wild, the adventure activities offered are a must and are suitable for all ages and abilities. Mountain biking, canyoning, rappelling, tubing, zip-lining and swinging like Tarzan across the canyon are just some of the ways you can get your heart racing whilst enjoying the beautiful natural landscape.
