Rincon del SocorroIbera Wetlands, Argentina
Set in the middle of its own 12,000 hectare estate, Rincon del Socorro is a former cattle ranch which has been developed by its American environmentalist owner into a nature reserve, perfectly complementing the vast wilderness of the Ibera Wetlands on its doorstep.
The combination of lakes, floating islands and savannah landscapes provide habitat for a fascinating variety of animal and bird life which can be viewed by boat, on foot or on horse back.
The estancia was converted into a hotel in 2005 but very much retains the tranquility and environmental connection of the old ranch. The nine rooms are colonial in style and located either in the original house or in separate cottages.
The tariff is full board and the food is simple but excellent, including a very popular barbeque several nights a week.
We particularly enjoyed walking in the hotel grounds, getting up close to the surprisingly tame Capybaras and having to avoid stepping on armadillos after dark!
