Pacuare LodgeEastern Costa Rica

Pacuare Lodge is, without doubt, one of the highlights of any visit to Costa Rica. This unique luxury eco-lodge is beautifully set on the banks of the Pacuare River in the heart of a virgin tropical forest and is an experience not to be missed.

Part of the adventure is actually getting there: choose from rafting down the river over the rapids, or an adventurous 4×4 ride down a rocky road and then across the river on a cable in a ‘gondola’ – or you can even fly in by helicopter.

The lodge itself has grown organically through the years and has been personally overseen and developed by the owners. The setting, the attention to detail and the service are all exemplary and the eco-credentials are also great. There is some electricity from a water-turbine for the kitchens and reception area but almost all of the rest of the resort uses candle-power, which cast a romantic glow at night time.

We were particularly impressed by the food, which is excellent and were amazed by the wine cellar complete with some superb vintages of wines from across Latin America. The Jawa Juu spa, which opened in 2013, offers relaxing massage overlooking the river and is the perfect antidote after a busy day of activities.
