Accommodation
Sumaq Machu PicchuAguas Calientes, Peru
The Sumaq Hotel is located on the bank of the Vilcanota River in Aguas Calientes, just a few minutes walk from the bus stop where all visitors to Machu Picchu (or at least, those who are not walking) join the bus to take them up to the ruins. Those who decide to walk up do pass in front of the hotel from an early hour, but the rooms have good sound insulation and we did not notice any problem with noise.
The hotel has 59 rooms and 3 suites which are all decorated with soft furnishings sourced from the Sacred Valley which gives them a rich warm feel. They are all a good size and most have views out over the road and river in front of the hotel. The building was not designed as a luxury hotel and the common areas and architecture have more of a four star rather than five star feel to them, and also because most guests only stay here one night the reception is always busy with guests checking in and out. But the hotel is conveniently located and comfortable, and with a lack of many alternative high quality hotels in Aguas Calientes, the Sumaq is a pleasant place to stay.
For those who may wish to stay longer than one night, the hotel organises some excursions and activities such as bird watching, nature walks, an Andean wedding ceremony or cooking classes (the food is very good at the hotel).
