The Chilean Lake District
Spectacular scenery in one of Chile’s most treasured landscapes
The Andes dominate this beautiful region of snow capped volcanoes, waterfalls, evergreen forests and crystal-clear lakes, where visitors can relax against this stunning backdrop.
Puerto Varas (the City of Roses) is a very attractive, welcoming town and is an ideal place to start off exploring the countryside. The town is known for its German traditions and its fish and seafood. Puerto Varas is located on the southern shore of Llanquihue, not far from Puerto Montt, the capital of the region and main access airport.
To the north east, Lake Villarrica lies at the heart of the Lake District and is dominated by the conical shaped, snow capped Villarrica Volcano. This area offers very good trekking, mountain biking and horse riding opportunities and is also where our two favourite hotels, Antumalal and Hacienda Vira Vira are both located. Keen gardeners will recognise many species of plants such as hibiscus, delphiniums and even Monkey Puzzle trees growing in the wild which Victorian plantsmen brought back to Europe and the USA.
The Lake District combines well with a trip to Chiloe Island just off the coast of Chile, which is well known for its timber churches and deserted coastal scenery. Going the other way, the region connects well with the Argentinian Lake District for guests seeking more time in this serene and verdant part of South America.
