Fazenda Catuçaba is a delightful rural hideaway nestling peacefully in a valley surrounded by rolling hills just under three hours’ drive from the bustling metropolis of São Paulo. Set in a 450-hectare private estate, the fazenda (working farm) produces organic coffee, vegetables, cachaça and meat and offers a real getaway from the busy outside world.
Kick back and commune with nature and leave the stresses and strains of your busy everyday life behind… but be prepared to engage in a “digital detox”: there is no TV, no WiFi and very limited mobile phone signal. The luxury is not in the counts of the cotton threads in the sheets, gourmet meals or over-attentive service; it is in the simplicity of organic meals prepared from the home-grown gardens, the clean air and the beautiful surroundings.
We very much enjoyed the guided horseback rides around the hills on the well-mannered horses, where there are various sculptures to be found, as well as afternoon walks around the lake.
The main farm house, which dates from the mid-19th century, houses the dining room, living room and kitchens. Guest accommodation comprises eight simple but comfortable double rooms and two suites housed in separate single-storey buildings a few minutes’ walk from the house and offering views over the valley, lake and wooded hills.
Fazenda Catuçaba is a very special place and is almost totally self-sustainable in terms of food production and waste composting. It offers the perfect antidote to stress and is also great for families with children who will love the country setting and horse riding.
