Accommodation
Alto AtacamaSan Pedro de Atacama, Chile
The Hotel Alto Atacama has been built in the style of a traditional adobe village, using red earth and local stone, surrounded by a beautifully designed ‘desert garden’ where llamas are kept in pens – all set off against a dramatic back drop of red sandstone cliffs.
The hotel has 32 suites all decorated with local crafts and weavings, and there are a number of separate outdoor relaxation areas arranged around six swimming pools. This means that guests can always find a quiet spot where they can take a dip and chill out.
The hotel offers eight excursions per day out of a total of 33 on offer. These are spread across 5 categories:
Cultural: Exploring sites from the 10,000 years of human habitation in the area including archaeological sites, artwork, farming techniques and cuisine.
Contemplative: Excursions to immerse you into the Atacama desert, including the salt flats, salt lakes, wetlands, lagoons and the Tatio Geysers. Expect breath-taking sunrises and sunsets.
Astronomical: Taking advantage of the lack of clouds, (as a result of the dryness of the region,) the hotel has its own private open air observatory with an expert guide on hand to help you. At full moon the hotel offers a special night time trek.
Adventure: A range of walking and biking adventures that visit many of the more stunning local areas, including a yoga lesson at the nearby Ckepi lookout point.
Expedition: More demanding tours (that require two days of acclimatisation beforehand). These range from half-day to two day efforts. Expect high-altitude and amazing views.
At the end of an active day, this hotel is an exceptional place to relax and enjoy the excellent cuisine.
